Tech bootcamps at the University of California, Davis prepare students for careers in coding, data analytics, cybersecurity, and digital marketing. The part-time format allows students to continue working while they train for technology careers over the course of 18-24 weeks.

Bootcamps are offered through the four-year research university's Continuing and Professional Education department in partnership with Trilogy Education Services — a company that partners with dozens of colleges and universities to bring top coding bootcamps to students.

Bootcamps currently operate completely online since in-person programs at the Sacramento campus were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Online learners still gain hands-on experience by working in teams to complete projects and timed exercises. Profile coaches and career directors ready students for the job market by helping to curate resumes, personal blogs, digital portfolios, and LinkedIn accounts.

Bootcamp students do not need to be enrolled at UC Davis, and they do not receive college credit for bootcamps. However, graduates do receive a notice of completion from UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education.

UC Davis Bootcamps

UC Davis bootcamps require students to attend synchronous sessions online for 10 hours per week, and then complete coursework on their own time for about 20-30 hours per week. New bootcamps begin every quarter. Attending a bootcamp part time allows students to graduate in about six months.

Bootcamps — led by instructors with at least three years of professional experience — include timed class exercises and group projects that can be featured in a professional portfolio. Prospective students do not need a tech background since UC Davis offers pre-course tutorials.

Most UC Davis bootcamp applicants do not need a tech background, although applicants to the data science bootcamp should have some experience in data science. All applicants should also have a passion for learning.

The bootcamp offers a rolling-admission process. To kick-start the application process, incoming students need to complete an online application form or call the admissions department to set up a phone interview with a UC Davis bootcamp advisor.

Those who pass the interview must take an assessment, which tests an applicant's problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED certificate.

UC Davis Student Outcomes

Prospective bootcamp students should research student outcomes for bootcamps they are interested in attending. Bootcamps frequently report outcomes like graduation rates, graduate employment rates, and starting salaries for graduates on their websites. Some bootcamps belong to the Council on Integrity in Results Reporting, which is an organization that sets standards for bootcamp outcomes reporting.

UC Davis bootcamps do not publish student outcomes on their websites, and Trilogy Education Services also does not publish outcomes online. However, Trilogy Education does report that graduates of its programs have found jobs at over 3,000 companies, including Google, IBM, Oracle, and Apple.
