  • Spain's IE University will now have a presence in New York, school officials announced.
  • The school replaced Glasgow Caledonian University as the sole member of Glasgow Caledonian New York College (GCNYC).
  • GCNYC will be renamed IE New York College, pending accreditation approval.
  • That new campus will feature a heavy focus on sustainability.

A top international business school will now have a campus in the United States.

IE University, a private, Madrid-based business school, will launch a new college in New York City. The school replaced Glasgow Caledonian University as the sole member of Glasgow Caledonian New York College (GCNYC), according to a press release from the school.

That institution will be renamed IE New York College (IENYC), pending accreditation approval of the name change.

Glasgow Caledonian University launched GCNYC in 2013. It announced plans to sell the institution in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood last year amid issues attracting students and delays in being able to award degrees, per the BBC.

The newly minted IE New York College will remain independent from IE University, but both will "have a complementary academic purpose with a focus on driving positive change through education, research, and innovation," IE University's Diego del Alcázar said in the release.

"Both have a major focus on business and on advancing the sustainability agenda," del Alcázar said. "This is a unique opportunity, which brings with it an injection of energy and also an enormous responsibility. IENYC will work to generate positive impact not only in the higher education global scene but directly in the city."

Jacqueline LeBlanc, vice president and provost of GCNYC, said in the release that the institution "will benefit from IE University's global network, collaboration with the United Nations, and research for the improvement of the human condition."

IENYC and IE University will feature transfer opportunities for students. The change won't affect GCNYC's current students' pathways to graduation, according to the GCNYC website. The only planned changes in staffing currently are to the college's Registrar and Student Finance Office.

GCNYC already has a heavy focus on business sustainability, a high-demand skill for prospective master's students. The college offers master's of science degrees in business for social impact and sustainability; diversity, equity, and inclusion leadership; and sustainable fashion.

The IE University Business School is a major player in the global education landscape.

It offers both master of business administration (MBA) degrees and a host of specialized master's degrees in areas such as sustainability, digital innovation, and more.

It won't be the only major international business school with a U.S. presence: IESE, another Spanish business school, also has a Manhattan campus with a heavy focus on global business management.

The elite international business school INSEAD, another major innovator in sustainability education, has a hub in San Francisco.
