It may take a few years for self-driving cars to take over the roadways, but artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common. Artificial intelligence can translate languages, decide which TV shows and movies you are likely to enjoy, and power digital assistants. Google even has an AI that can compete with the best Starcraft II players.

Through artificial intelligence, computers can analyze data and use it to solve complex questions. AI enables computers to learn, plan, and reason — almost like human beings. As AI gains popularity, job opportunities in the field increase. And one way to enter this in-demand field is by attending a coding bootcamp.

Although there aren't many AI-specific coding bootcamps, many bootcamps — especially data science and data analytics bootcamps — offer a unit on machine learning, which is one of the techniques used in AI. These bootcamps offer an intensive, hands-on learning experience that can be an excellent way to embark on a new career in AI.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the process of enabling computers to think and learn like human beings. There are two systems for classifying AI. The first divides AI into four groups: reactive machines, limited memory, theory of mind, and self-aware. The second divides AI into three groups: artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), and artificial superintelligence (ASI).

Using the first classification system, all AI in use today falls into the reactive machines and limited memory categories. Reactive machines respond based on their programming but have no capability for learning. Limited memory machines can learn from historical data, drawing better conclusions as they accumulate more data.

Theory of mind and self-aware AIs are theoretical for now. Theory of mind AIs will be able to deduce the thought processes, beliefs, emotions, and needs of the people and other machines it interacts with. Self-aware AIs will have a sense of self, having their own emotions, needs, and beliefs.

Using the second classification system, all AI in use today falls under the category of ANI. This type of AI can only perform a specific task. It can do what it is programmed to do and nothing more. AGI refers to AI that can function similarly to a complete human being, performing many different types of tasks. ASI refers to AI that possesses superintelligence. AGI and ASI do not yet exist. They are purely theoretical.

Why Should I Learn AI?

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, machine learning is becoming an integral part of software development. It is possible that, in the future, machine learning skills will be required for those seeking software development jobs. Learning AI skills could also put you at the forefront of some exciting developments, such as self-driving cars and AI-powered robots.

AI Jobs

Attending one of the best artificial intelligence bootcamps can help you qualify for a variety of AI jobs, including computer scientist, research engineer, statistician, director of analytics, and data engineer. Here is more information on some of the jobs that are most likely to require AI or machine learning skills, according to Indeed.

  • Machine Learning Engineer: Machine learning engineers create AI algorithms that teach computers how to learn and make predictions from large data sets. Based on data gathered by Payscale in March 2023, machine learning engineers earn an average salary of $113,561 per year.
  • Data Scientist: Data scientists collect, store, organize, manage, and analyze companies' data to solve business questions and make key predictions that impact the business. They understand business and have the analytical skills necessary to mine large amounts of data for useful insights. In March 2023, Payscale reported the average base salary for these professionals as $98,782 per year.
  • Computer Vision Engineer: Computer vision engineers use software to enable computers to process images and derive meaning from them. Thanks to computer vision engineers, computers can gather useful information, such as distances from images. As of March 2023, Payscale reported the average base salary as $116,043 per year.

AI Career Outlook

The demand for machine learning engineers jumped 344% from 2015-2018. Other AI jobs with big increases in demand from 2015-2018 include robotics engineer (128%), computer vision engineer (116%), and data scientist (78%).

Frequently Asked Questions About Artificial Intelligence Bootcamps

What is an artificial intelligence coding bootcamp like?

Most bootcamps offer an intensive learning experience that packs a lot of information into a few short months. You can attend an AI bootcamp full time or part time, online or in person. Most require you to attend in-person or virtual classes at a certain time, but some bootcamp providers offer self-paced online bootcamps.

Data science or data analytics bootcamps often teach artificial intelligence. These programs typically start off with a foundation in data analysis using tools such as MySQL and Tableau. Students typically learn to program in Python and, sometimes, R. These bootcamps often have one or two units devoted to machine learning.

How long does it take to complete an AI bootcamp?

This depends on the program you choose. Consider that some programs are designed to last 2-3 weeks, and others provide a deeper immersive as long as six months. You also have the choice of pursuing one of these machine learning bootcamps on a full-time or part-time basis. Some bootcamps allow you to accelerate completion if you have prior experience. One key benefit of a part-time bootcamp is you don't have to sacrifice work or family obligations. But a six-month immersive gives you more experience that may lead to a fellowship or certification from a college such as UC San Diego.

How much do AI bootcamps cost?

The length and syllabus of a bootcamp will impact your tuition cost. Providers such as Udacity offer inexpensive short-term programs that cost as little as $1,197-$1,596 for 12-16 weeks, and immersive bootcamps on this ranking cost as much as $16,500.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average undergraduate tuition at a four-year university was $16,600 for the 2020-21 academic year, totaling $66,400 for four years. For some learners, a bootcamp is a good option to get in-demand skills and career preparation in a relatively short time — and at a lower cost.

What are the skills needed for AI?

According to Simplilearn, the top artificial intelligence skills are programming languages such as Python and R, linear algebra, statistics, signal processing techniques, and neural network architectures. Almost every data science bootcamp teaches Python, and some teach R as well. They also cover linear algebra and statistics. Occasionally, you can find a bootcamp that teaches neural networks, but that is not as common.

If you want to increase your competitiveness for AI jobs, consider learning some additional programming languages. In addition to Python and R, many employers look for candidates who know how to program in Java and C++.

Are coding bootcamps worth it?

Considering that annual salaries for AI professionals are often over $100,000 per year, it is likely an AI bootcamp will be a worthwhile investment for most people. Other types of coding bootcamps may be less likely to yield such a high income upon completion. For example, a software engineering or web development bootcamp prepares you for entry-level developer jobs, which pay much less.

You can figure out whether a bootcamp is worth it for you by taking into consideration the cost of the bootcamp, as well as the salary you earn now and the salary you expect to earn after your bootcamp.
