In a TikTok video amassing hundreds of thousands of views, John Green announced that summer Study Hall courses like American Government and Politics, U.S. History to 1865, and Intro to Human Communication will start June 17.
“Study Hall’s goal is to make college more accessible for students who are unsure, ” Hank Green said in another TikTok video. “Instead of jumping off a cliff, it’s like a series of steps that have foam pits at the bottom of them.”
The first Study Hall cohort with ASU launched in 2023, a seven-week fully online class to earn college credit at little cost to students’ finances and GPA. Anyone can sign up for Study Hall to potentially earn college credit if they have a valid ID (or birth certificate if they’re under 18).
Study Hall offers courses throughout the year for just $25 a class. However, once you’ve completed the course and are happy with your grade, you can convert it into college credit for $400, or $150 per credit. Each of the classes offered by Study Hall is worth three college credits.
Your credits will be from ASU on your official transcript, and you can transfer your credits to any institution that accepts ASU credits.

You also don’t have to convert the course into college credit, saving your GPA and money if you’re unsatisfied with your grade. If you’re on the fence about whether to convert the class for college credit or want to save money, you have one year to decide.
Comparatively, for the same ASU credit on your transcript, you would have to pay thousands per semester at ASU Online since they don’t offer per-credit tuition rates. Other colleges typically charge from $150-$600 per credit for in-state students.

You’ll have six months of access to the course materials and have two weeks after the course ends to finish your quizzes and tests.
Some class instructors have live office hours, while others are available by recording if you can’t make a live call.

Other Free Online Courses Blow Up on TikTok
Harvard’s free and affordable certificate classes on the U.S. Constitution, public policy, and U.S. political institutions have also caught wind on TikTok amid the Trump administration’s fight against the Ivy League university.
These courses have been free to audit for a while through the Harvard Business School Online platform and other platforms like edX. You can also pay for a certificate to add it to your resume.
