What to Know About Tuition Reimbursement

  • Tuition reimbursement or assistance is a popular perk offered by many U.S. companies.
  • Companies often offer full or partial tuition coverage to retain and attract employees.
  • Reimbursement caps and eligibility requirements vary by company, some being much stricter than others.

As the cost of attendance at U.S. colleges and universities continues to rise, there’s never been a better time to consider alternative methods of paying for your education. Though scholarships, grants, and work-study programs are all great options, one of the best ways to get your education paid for is through tuition assistance and reimbursement programs from employers.

An increasing number of employers have launched new and upgraded tuition assistance programs to attract and retain employees or to develop the skill set of their current workforce. But few employees take advantage of these programs, often because of a lack of awareness.

InStride, an organization that helps connect companies and postsecondary institutions, reports that in 2025, just 1 in 4 employees (25%) who were interested in tuition-reimbursement benefits started applications to receive them. Yet 82% of employees who utilized these benefits say that the skills or degree they earned helped them become more effective employees. Slightly more (84%) say that the education they received prepared them for the future of work.

And employers benefit too. Tuition reimbursement of up to $5,250 per employee is tax-deductible for companies.

Below is a list of companies that offer full or partial assistance or reimbursement to their U.S. workers.

What if my company’s tuition reimbursement program doesn’t cover the full cost of my education?

As you may already know, “tuition and fees” are just one component of overall education costs. Typically, your total cost of attendance will be higher than that initial sticker price, as you’ll still need to pay for books and other supplies, transportation if you’re a commuter, and housing in some cases. So, if you’re still in need of additional help, you can supplement that gap with other financial aid resources like scholarships, grants, work-study programs, or student loans. And whenever possible, try to enroll in programs offered by schools with robust financial aid offerings.
