The largest college in Illinois is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As of 2023, 55,000 undergraduates and graduate students were enrolled on campus. The student body also includes more than 19,000 students of color on campus — more than any other top-ranked Midwest university, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

There were 95 four-year colleges in Illinois and 152 degree-granting institutions as of the 2020-2021 school year, according to data provided by NCES. This includes 12 four-year public colleges.
