Colleges in South Atlantic States Prep for Hurricane Ian

Institutions are canceling classes and shutting down campuses in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina as the Category 1 hurricane approaches.

  • After devastating Florida, Hurricane Ian strengthened in the Atlantic and now threatens Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
  • Colleges in those states are responding by canceling classes and shuttering campuses.
  • Most institutions in those states anticipate resuming normal schedules by Monday, Oct. 3.

After devastating Florida, Hurricane Ian entered the Atlantic, strengthened, and on Friday is threatening coastal communities in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane.

As a result, institutions from Georgia to central North Carolina have closed campuses and canceled events. Here are the latest closures for colleges in the South Atlantic region threatened by Hurricane Ian.

Georgia

  • Georgia Southern University shifted to online class from Thursday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Savannah State University shifted to online classes from 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 to Friday, Sept. 30.
  • All Savannah Technical College campuses will close at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 and will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Saint Leo University moved all classes online from Monday, Sept. 26 to Tuesday, Sept. 27. Classes are canceled from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Friday, Sept. 30.
  • College of Coastal Georgia will be closed Thursday, September 29 to Friday, September 30.
  • Savannah College of Art and Design will be closed Thursday, Sept. 29 through Monday, Oct. 3.
  • Ogeechee Tech closed at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 and all day Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Savannah Technical College campuses closed at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 and will remain closed through Saturday, Oct. 1.
  • East Georgia State College (Statesboro and Swainsboro locations) will be closed from Thursday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Sept. 30.

South Carolina

  • South Carolina State University canceled classes Friday, Sept. 30.
  • University of South Carolina canceled all classes, virtual and in-person, for Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Limestone University in Gaffney will be closed on Friday, Sept. 30. Virtual classes will continue.
  • College of Charleston canceled in-person classes Thursday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Benedict College canceled all in-person classes for Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Central Carolina Technical College closed campus Friday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 3.
  • Claflin University canceled all in-person classes Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Columbia College canceled all in-person classes Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Columbia International University closed campus Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Midlands Technical College closed campus Friday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 3.
  • Morris College canceled classes and closed campus Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022 and will hold virtual classes Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College canceled all evening classes on Thursday, Sept. 29, and will be closed Friday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 3.
  • Voorhees University closed Thursday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 1. All classes and outdoor activities are canceled.

North Carolina

  • UNC Wilmington moved to Condition 1 of the Adverse Weather Policy from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 through 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Classes will operate on a regular schedule.
  • Methodist University closed all on-campus classes and events on Friday, Sept. 30. Online classes will proceed as normal
  • Bladen Community College closed campus on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Brunswick Community College shifted to online learning on Friday, Sept. 30. All campus locations will be closed
  • Cape Fear Community College closed all campus locations on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Robeson Community College shifted to online learning on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Miller-Motte College shifted to online learning and campus closed on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • UNC Pembrooke canceled all classes on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Fayetteville State University canceled all classes Thursday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 2.
  • Barton College closed Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Fayetteville Technical Community College shifted to online learning on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • UNC Greensboro canceled all classes on Friday, Sept. 30, including online classes.
  • N.C. A&T canceled all classes on Friday, Sept. 30.
  • Craven Community College will be closed Friday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 2.
  • Duke University canceled in person classes after 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
