After completing an online master’s degree in nutrition, many graduates choose to become certified or registered as a nutritionist or dietitian. Most states require licensure or certification for practicing dietitians, and licensing requirements vary by state.

  • Registered Dietitian (RD): The curriculum and requirements for licensure are set forth by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), and include a rigorous, 1,200-hour dietetic internship (DI) at a hospital or healthcare facility with an accredited DI program, where students gain the practical knowledge to work as a dietitian. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the national AND examination. Those who pass are certified as licensed Registered Dietitians, a credential required by many employers in the sector. If RD licensure is your goal, you should only consider schools that offer a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), which prepares students for the required dietetics internship and the national exam.
  • Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS): Granted by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS), requires a master’s degree in nutrition, the successful completion of a 900-hour internship, and passing the CNS exam given by the BCNS. CNS certification is fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). To remain in good standing as a CNS, the BCNS requires the completion of 75 hours of continuing education credits every five years.

Colleges and universities voluntarily seek accreditation to determine if its programs and faculty meet the standards for higher education. If the standards are met, the institution is accredited and regularly reassessed. There are several types of accreditation, including institutional, which refers to the entire institution, and program-specific, which relates to individual programs of study within the institution. Within an accredited institution, individual programs may be accredited separately from another agency, typically from the professional association linked to that field of study. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) is the accrediting agency for education programs preparing students for careers as registered dietitians, nutritionists, or dietetic technicians.

Regional accrediting organizations operate in specific regions of the country, and they grant accreditation to those schools that meet their minimum standards of quality. While national accreditation may sound more prestigious, it isn’t. Regionally accredited colleges are more academically-oriented, and don’t usually accept transfer credits from nationally accredited institutions because they haven’t met the same stringent standards.

Perhaps you’re wondering who is keeping an eye on the different accrediting agencies out there. Schools apply to these different agencies for accreditation, and the agencies, in turn, apply to the U.S. Department of Education for federal recognition. The Department of Education establishes standards, and each agency must satisfy the criteria set forth by the DOE to earn its approval. As you consider your choices, don’t just check that the school is accredited. Check that the accrediting agency is also recognized by the Department of Education or the CHEA. If your goal is to become a registered dietitian, make sure your online nutrition master’s degree program is accredited by ACEND, the agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Millions of previously uninsured Americans now have health coverage thanks to President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA), and an aging baby boomer population has led to rising demands throughout the healthcare industry.
